Goal

Early Dutch Books Online provides free access to the full text of digitized books from 1781-1800 (over 2 million pages in total), as a result of a cooperation between the libraries of the University of Amsterdam and Leiden University and the National Library of the Netherlands.

Terms of Use: what can you do with the material?

No copyright exists in the individual books anymore, nor in their parts (illustrations, articles etc). You may download them for free, print them and redistribute them for any purpose (whether commercial or not, on paper or digitally), on condition that you always mention the source:

  1. information concerning the book, among which (if known): author, title, year of publication,
  2. the library who owns the book, and
  3. this website, as the source from which the material was taken.
You can find the author, title, year of publication and originating library in the full record view, or under the tab "Details of this object".

The website also contains explanatory texts written by employees of the three libraries. You may reuse these texts for any purpose as well, provided that you mention the source:

  1. if mentioned: the author him/herself and/or the library who provided the text, and
  2. this website, as the source from which the material was taken.

Please note: It is not permitted to copy and redistribute the whole book database/website or substantial parts of them (whether on paper or digitally). For this, you require permission of the three libraries, being the right holders. U can use the contactform on this website to contact them.

Right holders

This website including the book database is a joint publication of the libraries of the University of Amsterdam and Leiden University and the National Library of the Netherlands to which the Dutch Copyright Act and the Dutch Databases Act apply. This means that you may not copy and/or redistribute the whole book database and website or substantial parts of them without permission of the libraries. However, you may do so without permission with individual books which do not make up a substantial part of the whole database or website, provided that you fully mention the source (see above).
